Lighthouse at Turnberry

The Turnberry Point Lighthouse is located on the coast of Scotland, approximately 50 miles southwest of the city of Glasgow.  It stands amidst the ruins of the castle where legendary Scottish hero Robert Bruce is said to have been born in 1272.  The lighthouse was in active service from 1873 until 1985; it is currently a historic monument, maintained by the Scottish Lighthouse Board.

In this painting, the lighthouse is viewed from the tee box on the 9th hole of the nearby Alisa Course at Turnberry, three-time host to the British Open, and one of the most fabled of all Scottish links courses.

(The artist has a personal fondness for this location.  Prior to painting her picture, LaVerna personally visited this area in 1990, to include the lighthouse.  During this trip she scored her first and only hole-in-one on the 160-yard, par three 15th hole on this course at Turnberry.)
